The Robin Row Case the Final Betrayal of Motherhood

Robin Lee Row killed her husband and two children in order to collect on their life insurance policies. On February 10, 1992, a fire broke out on the first floor of an apartment where Robin Rows estranged husband and two children were living. When the firemen arrived at the burning building they discovered the bodies of Robins husband Randy Row, 34, and their children Joshua, 10, and Tabitha, 8. All had died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It was determined that the fire had been started in two places on the first floor of the apartment and a liquid had been used to ignite the fires. It was also determined that the circuit switch to the smoke alarm had been flipped to the off position and that the furnace fan was set to run continuously, which would speed up the circulation of the smoke throughout the apartment. The Investigation Robin Row had been staying with her friend, Joan McHugh, because of marital problems. In the weeks prior to the fire, Row had been telling McHugh and other friends that her husband had kidnapped, raped and physically abused her and that she was planning on getting a divorce. A Terrible Feeling On the night of the fire, Row awakened McHugh at 3 a.m., telling her that she had a terrible feeling that there was something wrong at the house. To put her mind at ease, McHugh went with Row to check on the house and her children. As they turned onto her street they could see the lights of emergency vehicles and Row told McHugh that there must have been a fire. At that point, they could not see any smoke. It was a guess on Rows part. When they got to the house Row was informed that her husband and children had died as a result of a fire.  Because of the nature of the fire Row became a lead suspect in the police investigation. When the police searched her car they discovered copies of six life insurance policies taken out on the Row family totaling around $276,000 and naming Robin as the full benefactor. The most recent policy was purchased just 17 days before the fire. Also during the search, it was discovered that Robin had been embezzling money from her job as the manager of the bingo games at the YMCA. She was arrested, charged with grand theft and put in jail. More Victims? The investigation also uncovered that Robin had previously lost two children. Her baby daughter died in 1977 from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and her son Keith died in 1980 in a what was ruled as an accidental house fire. Fabricated Tales of Abuse Detectives also surmised that Rows previous statements that Randy had abused her were lies. There were no police reports or visits from child services as she had claimed. They also discovered that Row was sexually involved with McHughs oldest son. An Untold Alibi With the evidence pointing heavily at Robin, the detectives continued to investigate her and solicited help from the friend that Robin had been staying with while separated from her husband. The friend began recording phone conversations and prompted by the detectives, she lied and told Robin that on the night of the fire she had awoken and gone downstairs and was surprised to see that Robin was not there. Robin told her that she was outside in the car, talking with her psychiatrist until around 4:30 a.m. Joan suggested to Robin that she tell the police since it would give her a solid alibi as to her whereabouts on the night of the fire. On March 23, 1992, Robin was arrested for three counts of murder. At no time did Robin ever tell the police believe her alibi. The Final Betrayal of Motherhood On December 16, 1993, Robin was found guilty of the crime of premeditated murder and she was sentenced to death. During her sentencing Judge Alan Schwartzman called her a pathological liar and went on to say, Robin Row’s actions represent the final betrayal of motherhood and embody the ultimate affront to civilized notions of maternal instinct,† adding â€Å"Maternal ’prolicide’ — the killing of one’s own children — is the embodiment of the cold-blooded, pitiless slayer — a descent into the blackened heart of darkness.† Currently, Robin Row is the only death row inmate in Pocatello Womens Correctional Center  (PWCC) in Pocatello, Idaho.​

Women have been fighting for equality in America since 1848, and since then major gains have been made. With women getting the right to vote in 1920 they are considered equal to men according to the United States Constitution. Over the next decades women increased opportunities available to them in nearly all aspects of life; be it sports, careers, pay, legal rights, and many others. However, one of the restrictions that was still in place on women until recently was restricting women from having full access to jobs in the military. When most people talk about â€Å"women in the military† they usually refer to women in combat jobs as women have been helping or serving the U.S. military in some capacity since its inception. Art a Play by Yasmina Reza Marc, Serge, and Yvan are friends. They are three middle-aged men of comfortable means who have stayed friends with each other for fifteen years. Since men of their age often lack opportunities to meet new people and sustain new friendships, their courtesy towards and their tolerance for one another’s quirks and affinities have been worn raw. At the opening of the play, Serge is smitten with his acquisition of a new painting. It is a modern art piece (white on white) for which he paid two hundred thousand dollars. Marc can’t believe that his friend bought a white on white painting for such an extravagant amount of money. Marc could not care less about modern art. He believes that people ought to have a few more standards when it comes to determining what is good â€Å"art† and therefore worthy of two grand. Yvan gets caught in the middle of Marc and Serge’s arguments. He does not find the painting or the fact that Serge spent so much to acquire it as offensive as Marc does, but he doesn’t adore the piece as much as Serge does. Yvan has his own real-life problems. He is planning a wedding with a fiancà © turned â€Å"bridezilla† and a host of selfish and unreasonable relatives. Yvan tries to turn towards his friends for support only to be ridiculed by both Marc and Serge for not having a strong opinion in their war over the white on white painting. The play culminates in a confrontation among the three strong personalities. They throw every personal choice that the others disagree with and look down on into each other’s faces. A piece of art, a visual and external representation of inner values and beauty, causes Marc, Yvan, and Serge to question themselves and their relationships to the core.  Ã‚   At his wit’s end, Serge hands Marc a felt tip pen and dares him to draw over his white on white, two hundred thousand dollars, adored, a piece of art. How far will Marc go to prove that he truly doesn’t believe that this painting is actually art? Production Details Setting: The main rooms of three different flats. Only a change in the painting above the mantle determines whether the flat belongs to Marc, Yvan, or Serge.Time: The presentCast Size: This play can accommodate 3 male actors. Roles Marc: Marc is a strongly opinionated man when it comes to what he values and an extremely condescending one towards what he does not value at all. Other people’s feelings do not factor into his decisions or filter the manner in which he talks to them and about them. Only his girlfriend and her homeopathic remedies for stress seem to have any sway over his strong and acerbic personality. On his wall above his mantel hangs a figurative painting that is described as â€Å"pseudo-Flemish† of a view of Carcassonne.Serge: Serge, according to Marc, has recently taken a dive into the world of Modern Art and has fallen head over heels with a newfound respect for it. Modern Art speaks to something within him that makes sense and which he finds beautiful. Serge has recently gone through a divorce and has a dim view of marriage and anyone searching to make a commitment to another person. His rules for life, friendship, and art went out the window with his marriage and now he has fo und peace in the realm of Modern Art where the old rules are thrown out and acceptance and instinct govern what is valuable. Yvan: Yvan is less high strung than his two friends about art, but he has his own issues in life and love that make him just as neurotic as Marc and Serge are. He begins the play stressed about his upcoming wedding and looking for a little support. He finds none. Although the physical production of art on canvas means less to him than it does to the others, he is more in tune with the psychological responses and reasonings behind such responses than either Marc or Serge are. That aspect of his personality is what thrusts him into being the middleman in this fight between friends and why he gets belittled by both of them. He actually cares more about their feelings and well-being than they do for him or each other. The painting above the mantel in his flat is described as â€Å"some daub.† The audience finds out later Yvan’s is the artist. Technical Requirements Art is light on technical requirements for production. Production notes specify the need for only a single set of a man’s flat, â€Å"as stripped down and neutral as possible.† The only object that should change between scenes is the painting. Serge’s flat has the white on white canvas, Marc’s has the view of Carcassonne, and for Yvan, the painting is the â€Å"daub.† Occasionally the actors deliver asides to the audience. Marc, Serge, or Yvan take turns stepping out of the action and addressing the audience directly. Lighting changes during these asides will help the audience understand the break in the action. No costume changes are needed and there are few props required for this production. The playwright wants the audience to focus on the art, the friendships, and the questions the play brings up. Production History Art was written in French for a French audience by playwright Yasmina Reza. It has been translated many times and produced in many countries since its debut in 1996. Art was performed ​on Broadway at the Royale Theater in 1998 for a run of 600 shows. It starred ​Alan Alda as Marc, ​Victor Garber as Serge, and Alfred Molina as Yvan. Critiques Definition and Examples A critique is a formal analysis and evaluation of a text, production, or performance- either ones own (a self-critique) or someone elses. In composition, a critique is sometimes called a response paper. When written by another expert in the field, a critique can also be called a peer review. Peer reviews are done to decide whether to accept an article for publication in a scholarly journal or, in an education setting, can be done in groups of students who offer feedback to each other on their papers (peer response). Critiques differ from reviews (these are also different from peer reviews) in that critiques offer more depth to their analysis. Think of the difference between a scholarly article examining a work of literature in a journal (critique) and the kinds of topics that would be covered there vs. a few-hundred-word review  of a book in a newspaper or magazine for the lay audience, for readers to decide whether they should purchase it.   Compare the term critique with  critical analysis,  critical essay,  and evaluation essay. Critiquing criteria  are the standards, rules, or tests that serve as the bases for judgments.   Critiquing a Paper A critique starts out with a summary of the topic of the paper but differs from a straight summary because it adds the reviewers analysis. If a critique is happening to the first draft of a paper, the issues brought by the reviewers need to be large-scale issues with the premise or procedure of obtaining the results- in the case of a scientific paper peer review- and arguments, such as flaws in logic or source material and fallacies, rather than be criticisms on a line level (grammar and the like). I believe this is a very serious issue, but taking away a person’s right to die how they so choose because of possible social influence on future peoples with similar circumstances in extremely unfair.This case is very significant, even today. This can be noted because of a ruling made by a lower court in the BC Supreme Court on June 15, 2012 that stated a criminal offence prohibiting physician-assisted suicide was unconstitutional on the grounds that denying disabled people the right to assisted suicide was contrary to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantee of equality under Section 15. Although this ruling will most likely be appealed, it still shows the validity of the case at hand because the same issue is still being argued 19 years later.Opinions on this issue could vary depending on circumstance. There are some who say that living together can strengthen a relationship by experiencing difficulties before marriage, it is financially sound, and that marriage isn’t a necessary step. These arguments†¦show more content†¦Temptation is so strong in a couple’s life because it’s not about them. Temptation is an assault by the demonic powers on the rival of God. Most couples always state, â€Å"We are sleeping in the sa me house together and in the same bed, but we aren’t having sex. That should be okay, right?† The problem with this is that we feel we can have control over our sinful nature. Sex is clearly a temptation for most cohabiting couples. God is not trying to steal the joy of any relationship. He knows what is best for our lives and He wants to protect us from heartache and pain. This is not to say that sex in itself is wrong or unlawful by God. Mark and Grace Driscoll write this in their book Real Marriage, â€Å"And Rather than renewing their minds to agree with the Bible, they instead change the meaning of the Bible to fit their own error, as they simply cannot fathom that God would speak in detail positively about sexual pleasure.† (Driscoll, p. 117). God says that sex is a positive thing, but it is not to be taken out of context. God designed this act of pleasure to unite two people as one flesh. It is an intimate and powerful act, and when we use it just for our own desires we will break one of the most important bonds God has designed.
